We’re delighted to welcome Dr. Meaghan Peuramaki-Brown, who will share her fascinating journey exploring the contents of an inherited suitcase full of genealogy goodies! Through this discovery, she uncovers stories of her Finnish ancestors and their experiences building a life in Northwestern Ontario.

Come hear about what she learned—and feel free to share your own story as well!

Check out a sneak-peak of a few items from the suitcase below

Everyone is welcome! 🙂

“Lives in Tiny Suitcases” is a quest to honour Finnish immigrant ancestors. By exploring documents preserved in a tiny suitcase, oral stories from Canada and Finland, and archaeological homestead research in the Thunder Bay region, Dr. Meaghan Peuramaki-Brown (Athabasca University) uncovers themes of identity, belonging, and resilience and invites the audience to reflect on their own migration histories.”

A few items found in the suitcase!

Meaghan’s Great-Grandparents – the focus of the presentation.

“The old sauna at my great-grandparents’ homestead in the Thunder Bay region (Tarmola), with family members and neighbours standing on shore and in boat on the Current River.”

A receipt for aspirin from an apothecary in Finland–for medicines they would have purchased for the trip over to Canada.
